Know the facts about heart health

Heart disease continues to be is the leading cause of death among men and women in the United States1, but in many cases, it can be prevented.  

The first step in prevention is simply knowing important numbers like your blood pressure, blood sugar, and total cholesterol can help you set the foundation for a healthy heart. .  

What are some common risk factors of heart disease?  

Modifiable risk factors include: smoking, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, diet, alcohol use, weight, and exercise.  

What causes a heart attack?  

A heart attack occurs when blood flow to the heart is suddenly interrupted. Without this blood supply, heart muscles may be damaged and begin to die. About 805,000 people have a heart attack each year.

How can I improve my heart health?

  • Get moving: Just 10 minutes of exercise a day can go a long way in improving cardiovascular health.  
  • Modify your diet: Try making small changes like giving up one unhealthy food a week or adding in one additional healthy food per day.
  • Reduce tobacco: Stopping smoking is the most impactful action you can take to prevent heart disease, heart attack, and stroke.
